I believe (although I haven't looked in to it closely) that eggdrops are
not inherently insecure.  A badly written eggdrop may well be a security
risk in that it may compromise the account of the user who is running it,
but I don't see how it can do more than that.
Eggdrops are, however, a nuisance.  Also, they have a habit of encouraging
script kiddies to look at your machine.
