I thought i did, however almost all standard boot scripts and init files
have httpd configured for startup as default.

Realy the documantaion does state howto do it all.
Start with "man httpd" it points folks to the configuration files which in
turn give more information.
Of course it all depends on how it was installed in the first place, which
the asker of the question did not say as i recall.
