victory!! I had not set up my DNS correctly. No wonder I couldn't ping any domain names..duh. I used the information in /etc/resolv.conf under the /control panel/networking/tcpip <adapter>/DNS tab and PRESTO...it works. Let this be a lesson, boys and girls, do the idiot-check before panicing!
