Thanks to all for replies to my problems with minicom and IRQs Again I am using REDHAT LINUX 5.0 (Hurricane) on a Cyrix 233 Mhz w/ 32MB and a Best Data 33.6 modem My RedHat Linux came from Linux for Dummies, - a great value becuase you get a pretty recent version of Linux and you get a well rounded book which provides great tips concerning installation. It was indeed an IRQ problem. Here is what I did. First of all I had read that IRQ's could/are shared. So using 'setserial -g /dev/cuaX' I would continually get listings that made me happy. IRQ4 was shared amongst cua0 and cua2 - FINE I thought since I wanted to use IRQ3 on cua1. I was using minicom to test my modem with wildly varying results, I could dial in sometimes, ppp was out of the question. NOTE: most of this was happening at bash shell, not X. I finally read and absorbed a paragraph of the latest PPP-howto that listed seperate IRQ's on every port. I used 'setserial -a' to accomplish this and then minicom and my modem were indeed one, workingin harmony. I then tried to follow the other PPP-howto about hostfiles and ppp-on scripts. But having read another faq entitled "adventrues in X against microsoft' or something that detailed using the 'NETWORK CONFIGURATION CONTROL PANEL' - this worked very well. I created a ppp interface linked to cua1 - where my modem is and filled in the normal ppp info there (e.g.: usernam, password, DNS addr, etc.) Now I clicked on the "activate" button in the Newtwork Control, and I heard my modem dial! Then I pinged my ISP's machine!! Then I telneted somewhere using a host name !!! In conclusion: For a standalone X-based environment I would suggest: a) assign UNIQUE IRQs to EACH port b) Configure your PPP using the X environment. I assumet his would not be acceptable if you want to use the Linux box as a server of any sort, except maybe a web/ftp server through your dialup ISP/PPP network. Hope this helps someone and please bring any incoorect information I wrote to my attention. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
