I am new to Linux (and much in the PC world besides just general
Windows applications)and have yet to pick a distribution.I have been
doing alot of reading.

The service I receive from Adelphia Cable is labeled a
"hybrid" or "one way" cable service. I actually conect to the service
through the phone lines. Adelphia, however did install both a
networking card and an external "cable" modem. As a result, I am able
to download files from the net much faster than using a 56k modem.
Uploads take the same amount of time as before; thus the "one way"
appelation.

Does the foregoing affect my choice of distribution? I have been
leaning slightly towards RH because of my experience level. That
decision, however, is not set in stone. I have found posts dealing
with cable modems but none that mentioned my "hybrid" type of issue
directly.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, and not as importantly, why did the cable company install a
NIC in my PC in connection with
its installion of the cable modem? Accordingly, they configured my
connection as if through a Lan and used Windows networking
capabilties. My box currently is
at home and not connected to other computers. I suspect
the answer to this will reveal my true ignorance in this area.

But I am afraid I need to ask to learn in some cases.

Thanks in advance for any constuctive suggestions.
