Thanks, Bryan. Of course, the first thing I did was to read the
Sound-HOWTO.
I also tried to compile kernel with several different configs. First -I
guess- the most "conventional": just one of the MAD cards. Did not
compile
properly. The Sound-HOWTO says: --------------------------------
[...]
3.1. Sound Cards
The following sound cards are supported by the Linux kernel
sound
driver:
=B7 [...]
=B7 MAD16 Pro (OPTi 82C928, 82C929, 82C930, 82C924 chipsets)
^^^^^^
=B7 [...]
=B7 Microsoft Windows Sound System (MSS/WSS)
=B7 [...]
--------------------------------
Then, as mine is "82C931" (ALMOST but not EXACTLY in list) I tried other
setups!!!
After this, I tried some others:
1. MAD + MPU 401: as the HOWTO says: "some cards need it, some others
not... See for specific sound cards... at Readme.cards". But I found
nothing specific for MY sound card. 2. MPU 401 (alone): Same result
(didn't work). 3. Microsoft sound system. > failed too. 4. some others...

Bryan: I want to show you why did I LATER try to compile my kernel with
Sound blaster Pro -as everything failed- support because the Sound-HOWTO
also says, when explaining how to "make config":
-------------------------------------------
SoundBlaster Pro support Y/n/?
Enable this option if your card is a SoundBlaster Pro or
SoundBlaster 16. Enable it also with any SoundBlaster Pro
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
clones. Answering "n" saves some memory but "y" is the safe
^^^^^^
alternative.
-------------------------------------------
Last news: also tried OSS-lite. My EXACT sound card WAS described in
OSS-Lite list, but NOT within Sound-HOWTO.
I got some sound with OSS-Lite (no need to recompile kernel):
Just some sound but LOW-quality and very low volume as OPTi931.
I'll keep trying !
Thanks for your hints!
