edit bash environment

[BROWNH]

I want to put /usr/local/bin into my bash path permanently. I can put it
there temporarily, but when I edit the following line in /etc/profile,
nothing changes:

PATH="$PATH:(another path):/usr/local/bin"

I'm running RH5.2.
