anyway, the way i described upgrading the kernel does work and does not
leave the kernel in a wrong directory structure...unless there is something
i am missing?  

However, i did put my 2.0.36 source on two days ago using the method
described and it compiled ok (without sound support, which will hopefully
be fixed once i try Mr Adams' suggestion.)
