At a guess it's because windows BS key on the windows boxes sends BS (^H)
(which AIX recognises) while the linux one is, for some weird
reason, configured to send DEL (^?).

You can either fix it so that the linux box sends a ^H (this involves
mokeying around with keymaps) or tell the windows telnet programs
to send out DEL and put stty erase ^? in your .profile.
