Hi all ... I just put slackware 3.6 from sunsite on my Toshiba laptop, and
got X mostly working. I wanted to install Window Maker, so I downloaded it
on my win98 box, and was going to ftp it over to the laptop across the
network. I couldn't upload, though ...

So I tried to just make a new user back on the Linux box, maybe one with
superuser privileges <and here's the main problem> ... using adduser ... and
all was well until I hit the final ENTER, where I got
"Making new account...
useradd: unable to lock password file
chfn: Unknown user <my user name>
passwd: Unknown user <same username here>
Done..."
SO - first, why can't I upload to my linux box from my 98 box across the
network - since it looks like the /etc/ftpaccess file says most anyone can
get in, and second, what's with this 'lock password file' thing? I'm pretty
new at Linux, and glad to get this far, but I'm bamboozled at this point.
thanks in advance!
