Hi Eugene,
   The modem being on COM 5 is sort of a new one to me.  I'm wondering if you 
meant IRQ 5.  If you did mean IRQ 5, then check into using "setserial" command
to properly configure your /dev/ttyS# (I use the tty devices, not the cua or
modem devices).
   I am a raging newbie, myself, so I might be completely misunderstanding and
giving you great piles of goo for assistance, but then again...perhaps not :)
