There are (at least) two ways of doing this.  The hard (but completely
reliable one) is:

start the process in an xterm as normal
switch to the vt
swap the standard input and output of the process in the xterm with that
of something running on the vt.  You will need to be root to do this (I
think)
kill X

The easy one:
Use a program called screen - it allows you to detatch things from one
tty/xterm and then re-attach them to another tty/xterm later on.
