Anyway your probleme should rather be that Win98 and WinNT use encrypted   
passwords and that samba does not by default. You can either tell samba   
to do so or tell windows not to do, ... your choice. For that and for all   
the other questions, Read the HOWTOs and the documentation. I can't   
access my linux box at this very moment but the HOWTO should be   
SambaHOWTO or SMB-HOWTO and the doc is in /usr/doc/sambaXXXX
There are special documentation describing howto use samba with Windows   
so READ it, you'll get your answers.
