Use the old text based xf86config and toward the end it will show you the resolutions
and give you an opportunity to change them and to choose your default and/or get rid
of "virtual" screen size (the annoying habit of the desktop being bigger than your
screen. If you want to edit it manually look for the file XF86Config (case sensitive).
I think it's in /etc or /etc/X11.

Subject: Changing X resolution to 800x600.. Can't do it.. Duh..

I'm having a hard time deciding between Caldera and Red Hat, but I am
currently swaying towards Caldera for one main reason.. A problem I can not
solve with X under Red Hat.
When I configure X in either package, it sets the default resolution to
the highest possible. I have a 14" monitor displaying X at 1128x800
(approximately).. Can you say "Eye Strain".. Sometimes I need a magnifying
glass just to see what's listed in my directory.
I got around this in Caldera by altering the XConfig text file.. Easy
enough.. But I couldn't find a similar file for RedHat. I found a
TextConfig file, but couldn't make heads over tails with it. Anyone know
how I can easily change my resolution in X to 800X600? >
