Thanks to everyone who sent helpful information, particularly Adoram. I tried a lot of things, including doing a hex dump and using several different fsck's. The boot sector appears to corrupted beyond repair. I've decided to re-install, but I've got a backup. This list and its participants are great. It's an excellent source for help, and hopefully I can contribute more than questions in the future. :) Josh
