The root partition definitely should not fill up so easily. Infact, for your
setup, it shouldn't have been written to at all except when upgrading system
critical files.
I would believe that you have either configured your filesystem incorrectly or
installed your programs in an incorrect location.
Generally, only /bin, /etc, /dev, /lib and /tmp should be on the root
partition. Directories such as /var and /opt should be on a seperate partition.
If the /var and /opt directory are in the root partition, move them over to
another partition and create symbolic links to replace them.
