BinHex is an encoding format that originated (and pretty much stayed) in the
Macintosh world, a way to convert binary files into (I think) a "printable
hex" format that could travel over the 7-bit serial/modem connections that
were still common a decade ago. For a long time (maybe still; I don't use
Macs these days) it was a standard as common as tar and zip in the Unix and
PC/Win worlds.

I don't know offhand of a unix/Linux program that will handle BinHex
conversions. Since its main use was for transmission of Mac executable
files, I don't recall the question ever coming up before. "BinHex 4.0" is a
Macintosh program (Mac filenames can include spaces) that will convert the
files back to binary format on a Macintosh.
