8 bit colour depth

I'd like to know if it possible to run a program requiring 8bit colour
depth on a 16bpp display.  I need to run other things at 16bpp, so I
can't revert to a 8bit display and run everything there.  And i'd rather
not run multiple X-servers on different displays.  Can anyone help me
here?
