If you boot linux from floppy and it correctly detects the drive, then you
can find out what the drive really is, tell the BIOS that (with any luck)
and you are away. If linux doesn't manage to detect the drive then there
ain't a lot you can do.
AFAIK Linux basically ignores anything the BIOS thinks it knows about hard
drives.
