Possably you are not doing anything wrong, there have been messages about
this problem with Redhat-5.1 before. I found one little problem, or what i
belive to be a problem in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, now i belive that Redhat
have put out new init scripts for 5.1 which have corrected a lot of
problems. Sorry i dont have a URL for them.

Now if you defined any config options as modules and did;
'make modules modules_install'
then the problem almost definatly lies with the scripts.

There are Redhat 5.1 users here on the list who have had this problem before,
weather or not they tryed my work around i dont know, if they do not answer
to your question with any information for you, let me know i will then send
you copies of the messages i wrote about this subject which i presumed
solved the /lib/modules/preferred-> problem.
