This is an inherited system running RH5.2. The last sysadmin learned on
this system (as am I), so lord know what goblins lurk about, but here is a
problem I run up against yesterday, advice gladly accepted.

I created a new user (useradd) and gave that person a password. That person
logged in successfully. When she went to change her password (passwd), she
received this error message: "UID & username does not match--imposter!"
Otherwise, the user has full functionality as a user, just cannot change
her password.

This same propblem appeared with some old users I re-set the password for
(they had forgotten their password). When the try to change their password
they are caled an imposter. This problem seems to have appeared since we
upgraded to RH5.2 just recently, but that is not for certain.

I think the problem is in the password or group files, I know a bit about
what they do, but hate to muck around guessing solutions and thus creating
more problems.

I found this entry for this user (dpopp) in the password file:

dpopp:o/.lAa05BV1Ww:552:544:RHS Linux User:/home/dpopp:/bin/bash

I found these entries for this user in the groups file:

dpopp::544:dpopp
as well as:
users::100:.....,dpopp,.....

Can someone tell me what is going on here can how I can fix it for the
current users who are having this problem, and how I can make changes so
new users do not have the same problem?

Thank you so much for your help!!!
