As for getting X to run...
OK here's what I had to do to get my new ATI AGP card to work.  Go to
www.xfree86.org and look at the 'compatability list'.  My card's
chipset was added in the newest release.  If it's there and not in the
older version (what version are you running anyway?) get XFree86-3.3.3
and install it.  I also found that using xf86config rather XF86Setup
and Xconfigurator was the best way to go.  It gives you more control. 
But you'll need more information, like monitor refresh rates, video
RAM, mouse type, etc.

Now I have 4M of vid RAM on my card but X was reporting 0, I found the
culprit to be the XF86Config file in /etc/X11, the line where my video
card's amount of RAM was set was commented out.  Take a look there and
see (it's easy to find look for video memory or something) and
un-comment.  

I'd still look for a new version of XFree86 and try running that, I
was surprised to find that it was that easy.
