If I'm following correctly what you've done, the driver you loaded in
c:\driver won't work under Linux. Since you describe a DOS/Windows-style
path, I surmise that what you loaded was a Windows driver, probably on a
disk that came with the video card. Linux cannot use Windows-based drivers.

I don't recognize the video card designator you list, and you don't say who
the manufacturer is. But if it runs in standard SVGA mode, it should run a
text-based console without any driver software. If you want the X11 GUI for
Linux, you need to find an X11 server that will work with the card. Look in
the Linux Hardware Compatibility HowTo, probably on your system (look in
/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs or /usr/doc/faq/howto or something similar) and
available at URL http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO-6.html for
a list of X11-compatible cards.

Some newer cards that work with X11 aren't listed here; the online version
fo the HowTo is 6 months old and doesn't reflect the latest release of X11.
I couldn't find "i740" listed in the online Hardware HowTo, so I can suggest
nothing more right now.

Hope this is some help. Apologies if I misunderstood your question.
