When trying to run a program, the shell (bash) looks only in the directories
specified in the PATH environment variable (enter "env" to see your bash
environmental variables, including PATH). Some distributions make the
current directory part of the default path (entered as ./), while other
don't. If yours doesn't, the workaround is to type "./programname" instead
of "programname".

As to the fvwm menu, the only way I know to add to it is by hand-editing the
"rc" file that fvwm gets its configuration info from. On my system, using
fvwm2 in the "looks like Win95" form, this file is ~/.fvwm2rc95 .
