VNC looks promising but it needs the "X" layer of stuff. We're just looking
for character based remote control/viewing. Any ideas?

Hi,
well, there's Xvnc with it's Xvnc server and client, both are available
for many platforms (even a VNC-viewer for Palm PDAs!). Don't know if
this will meet your needs. It's freely available on
http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/download.htm
