Hello,

The printer problem has been solved. The solution was to modify printer port mode in BIOS (from "parallell" into "compatible") of my PC. In case someone else needs to know....

Many thanks for advices received.

Best regards
Bengt T

Subject: Printer problem

Hello,

Can anyone please give me a hint on how to procede to get my PC/printer to
operate?

I have installed Red Hat 5.2 into my Compaq Presario 5670 PC. During the
installation I configured my printer as '/dev/lp1'.

After installation I rebooted I tried to print:

        [root@localhost /root]# cat file.ext > /dev/lp1

which only resulted in the following screen output:

        bash: /dev/lp1: Device not configured

I also tried:

        [root@localhost /root]# lpr file.ext

which resulted in the following screen output:

lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

lpc provides the following information:

        [root@localhost /root]# lpc
        lpc> status
        lp:
                queuing is enabled
                printing is enabled
                9 entries in spool area
waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)

printcap contains the following:

        [root@localhost /root]#cat /etc/printcap
        #
        # Please don't edit this file directly unless you know what you
        # are doing!
        # Be warned that the control-panel printtool requires a very
        # strict format!
        # Look at the printcap(5) man page for more info.
        #
        # This file can be edited with the printtool in the control-panel.

        ##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL bj200 360x360 a4 {} CanonBJ200 Default 1
        lp:\
                :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
                :mx#0:\
                :sh:\
                :lp=/dev/lp1:\
                :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:

/var/spool/lpd/lp directory seems ok.

During the session the following message now and then pops up on my
screen:

root: root> lp: Driver configured but no interfaces found.

My own assumption is that I may have a PC printer interface incompatibili-
ty problem to deal with.

Does anyone have any hints on how to proceed?

Best regards
Bengt T
