"com 4" is not a Unix/Linux designation. The Linux equivalent to Window's
COM4 is /dev/ttyS3 .
Aside from that, it is an age-old question ... but thats okay, that's what
the list is here for. The basic troubleshooting rundown is as follows:
1. Check /proc/interrupts ("cat /proc/interrupts") to see what it thinks is
on interupt 3. If anything other than a serial port is there, it is
interfering with your modem. If you have anything running on /dev/ttyS1
("COM1"), like your mouse, it is interfering with your modem.
2. See what setserial reports about the port ("setserial /dev/ttyS3"). If it
doesn't report a UART type, it isn't seeing the modem.
3. If your modem card is PnP, it is possible that Linux isn't setting it to
/dev/ttyS3 . I'm not experienced with the Linux PnP tools, but you may need
to look into them. There's a good HowTo, I believe.
4. Now for the really bad news: a lot of newer internal modems are so-called
"Winmodems." These are devices with limited functionality that rely on
software to emulate some of the hardware features in complete modems. The
bad news is that Linux lacks the needed emulation software for ANY of these
pseudo-modems.
5. Finally, the question I should have asked at the start: what does "linux
still can't see it" mean? Does minicom fail? pppd? seyon? What actual
software is failing and with what failure mode? If, for example, the problem
is with minicom, make sure that /dev/modem is set to point to /dev/ttyS3 .
There's more, but the odds are that your problem is somewhere in this range.
If everything here checks out okay, though, send another message (include
the results of the above checks) and we'll see what more we can do.
