Hi Andrew!
If both of you have computers connected to the Internet by modems, you
don't need any new hardware, but V(irtual) N(etwork) C(omputing)
software. For Linux, it would be (surprise, surprise...) XVnc from ORL:

At this site, there are VNC servers and clients for lots of other
platforms, too.
