Your description of the failure is too vague for targeted advice. The
general troubleshooting protocol here is:

1. Make sure your modem is where you think it is. If it's an external check
which port it's plugged into. If it's internal, run "setserial /dev/modem"
and make sure the response includes a UART type.

2. See if your modem will work with an ordinary terminal-style connection.
Use minicom to test this.

3. See what pppd is writing to your logs about the attempts. The file used
is a bit system dependent, buy probably it is /var/log/messages or
/var/log/syslog.

None of this is specific to kppp (which I don't use). These are the
"pre-kppp" issues to explore, the ones Cristian referred to in his message.
