Well i cant realy disagree with it being old, but let me put it another way.
2.0.0 was issued as "The stable kernel" of its series, however before it was
even issued there were doubts about its stability, this was proved true
within a few hours of its release, patches followed, even to date we now
have 2.0.36 as "The stable kernel", 2.0.37 is on its way.
The 2.0.xx series has been "proved" to be stable time and time again,
uptimes on heavily loaded servers of months are no execption.

There are now some doubts about the 2.2.0 kernel, as a matter of fact i
dont know if it has been realased "as yet", as the last version realase was
2.2.0-final, the linux-kernel mailing list has many bug reports about
crashes and "oopses" "aiee's" and so on, altho they may be from extream
cases it proves that 2.2.0 is far from finished, altho it is stabel under
normal curcumstancies.

I partisipated in using the 1.2.x kernel series when certain protocols were
being introduced into linux, i know what its like to patch the kernel source
2 and 3 times a day having the machine "oops" on me, locking up, refusing to
boot and once i did have a small corruption problem, however i did enjoy
hunting down problems, i dont want to do that again, thats why i still use
2.0.xx kernels.

2.2.0 may be out "very" soon, however it looks like being another 2.0.patch
after patch.

Those are my words of course.

Its not a case here of "you may want to download the latest Slackware" as
slackware 96, will not work along side of 2.2.0 kernel as is, period.
Its a case of "you need to upgrade to something like slackware 3.6.
