I am also running on a cyrix and it works fine with Linux.
Be carefull, 166 does not mean the speed is 166MHz, it means this is the
equivalent of intel 166.
I have a cyrix 200 and on the CPU with very very small characters it is
written 2.5X75MHz. This mean the bus clock on the MB must be set at 75
MHz with a multiplication factor of 2.5. As you can see 2.5X75=187MHz
and not 200. My MB was Intel and didn't like 75MHz which caused many
instabyllity. So I had to configure at 2.5X66MHz=166MHz and now the
system is stable.

Wouln't harm to check once more the settings on your MB to ensure the
CPU is not overclocked.
