The usual program that does this is "biff". In /etc/profile, you'll probably
find a line that reads "biff y". To disable notification for everyone,
comment it out or change it to "biff n". To disable notification just for
one user, put in that user's .profile or .login file "biff n".

If your system uses the shadow password system, it may also use the file
/etc/login.defs to set defaults. In that case, to eliminate mail
notification for everyone, comment out the line that reads: "MAIL_CHECK_ENAB
YES".
