We have been having a big problem with our user accounts since we upgraded
our server from RH 4.something to RH 5.2. Suddenly, no one can change their
password, including root! We also cannot change our finger info. The
password file looks OK, and we can create new users and delete old ones
(useradd, etc.), it is just changing passwords that is a problem.

We have spoken to many people about this, but no one has been of much help
until recently someone suggested that when we upgraded RH we may have
installed shadow password protection or PAM, and that may be the problem.
As far as we know, we did not do this intentionally. Perhaps we did it
unintentionally, or maybe it is the default installation(?).

In any case, we NEED to be able to be able to change passwords once again.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is PAM the problem? Can we
disable it if it is, or keep PAM but make it so we can again change
passwords? We are still not sure that this is the problem, but haven't come
up with any alternative explanations.

We are really stumped on this, if anyone has a clue as to what may be going
on here, please let me know. If you know of some documentation on the Web
that can help us out, please point us in that direction.

Thanks everyone for your help!
