I have had RedHat 5.2 installed and running smooth for the last 2 months. I
noticed "Cannot find map file" in my /var/log/messages file. I checked my old
log files and it has been appearing since I first installed, but I never took
any notice of it because it did not seem to cause any apparent problems.
Feb 7 10:34:37 localhost kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Feb 7 10:34:38 localhost kernel: Cannot find map file.
Feb 7 10:34:38 localhost kernel: Loaded 169 symbols from 8 modules.
I took someones sugestion and created a link called System.map:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Feb 7 10:54 System.map ->
System.map-2.0.36-0.7
Creating the link cleared up the "Cannot find map file" as you can see below:
Feb 7 10:57:21 localhost syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Feb 7 10:57:22 localhost kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Feb 7 10:57:23 localhost kernel: Loaded 4253 symbols from /boot/System.map.
Feb 7 10:57:23 localhost kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.0.36.
Feb 7 10:57:23 localhost kernel: Loaded 169 symbols from 8 modules.
My questions are:
1. Was the "Cannot find map file" a problem that should have been fixed or just
ignored?
2. Should I have created the above link to solve this problem?
3. Is this a Red Hat/Linux feature or bug?
