Hi Michael,
there are just as many compatibilty problems, with any pc
card that you buy. I think a lot of the modems that come with laptops are
win modems (well thi internal ones at least), as this reduces power

I kinda wish I'd gone here first and done a little bit of research, although
price and availability of the laptop I got was the biggest consideration.
The problems I have encountered so far ar that I bought an adaptec scsi pc
card, thinking that it would be okay, only to find out that it wasn't
supported. The same went for the internal modem, since its a win modem, I'm
out of luck, but the ethernet card was supported (Alloy en-6200p2). As with
setting up Xwindows, about an hour of playing around with XF86Config, and
tips from the net got it going under 5.2. then I installed 5.2, and it was
able to get a basic Xwindows running under the initial configuration.
