Try using xf86config to do the setup. It's very low-tech compared to the
others, but it's also a bit more reliable ... and since you have to answer
all the questions explicitly, it's easy to see if the problem is being
caused by something you don't know (say, your monitor's vertical sync rate).
SuperProbe will give you some of the info you'll need about your video card.

After doing this, if you're still unable to make it work, you'll be able to
tell us what settings you are using for server (by sure you try XF86_SVGA as
well as whatever specialized server you might try), vertical sync,
horizontal sync, and vidro card memory. Failure of the better modes is
usually the result of one of these 4 things being set wrong, but guessing
which one without a decent description of the config attempt is like playing
Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

Also, be sure t note the string of messages that shows up on the text
console that you run startx from -- in fact, it's handy to rediect that to a
file (something like "startx >xerror.txt 2>&1" will work). These messages
usually tell you, if a bit cryptically, what caused the larger modes to be
rejected.
