You dont need to "lose" your old kernel, keep it.
As to programs running most will, some might not, there should be no
problems with the programs.
As to 2.2.0 running i cant say, that will depend on weather your system is
suited for 2.2.x, check all the details in
/usr/src/linux/Documentaion/Changes in the new kernel.
Why use 2.2.0 when higher versions are available.
