Well, I've only installed a couple of RedHat packages (Debian has the
ability to install RedHat *.rpm files in addition to Slackware's and the 2000
or so native Debian packages), but my guess is that it's the Windows file
system that's the root of the problem.

Linux software packages use long filenames routinely. When you download to
a FAT16 file system, do you mean VFAT (Win95-type FAT16)?

I'd suggest a couple of things to try. First, move the file to a native
Linux partition and try installing it. If that doesn't work, try downloading
it from Linux directly to a Linux partition (this assumes you have PPP working
on Linux). And if neither of those work, hmm, how about "man rpm"?! ;-)
