I'd been operating under the conventional wisdom that the only virus out for
Linux was bliss and it was extinct.   However, while belatedly learning
system management tools, I ran rpm -Va to check my installed packages.
There were quite a few that flunked the md5 checksum, although that might
just have been due to post-install tinkering.

Now I'm assuming one foot in paranoia is good security.  

I tried doing web searches with key words "Linux" and "virus" but the few
pointers to sources of virus scan software gave me a BUGTRAQ post with an
expired link and McAfee's site, where I couldn't find anything for Linux.

Which brings me to the point where I ask the nice, kind people on the
mailing list to toss some nuts and bolts :^>  Advise, please?
