SCSI Tape Drive - how to use it and with what software?

I searched the /usr/doc and all the HOWTO's and FAQ's for this, but have
come up empty so far:

I have installed a Seagate SCSI tape drive with the travolli tapes (or
whatever they're called).  I think it's on /dev/st0, but I don't know how to
access it.

What free backup software is available for linux these days?  (I know tar,
but if that's all there is, how do I direct it to use my tape drive?)
