one of the advantages of Linux seems to be that you can start with a
distribution but don't have to finish there.

As someone once put it, you can comebine Slackware sources and RedHat RPMS
to have a "SlackHat" system.  
Whether you install from source code or from packages, it should all play
together.  

I've started with RedHat for an initial install and now that I'm getting
more confidence (a successful kernel recompile helps!) and more experience
and the Mandrake 5.3 disc off CheapBytes (which is supposed to come with the
2.2.1 sources), I'm going to be commiting some substantial overhauls.  I
plan to rip out sendmail for qmail, throw out the installed window managers
and use blackbox, and so on.  I've already thrown out linuxconf, it didn't
seem to work.  

I like the idea that instead of running a Microsoft machine or a RedHat
machine, I'll be running my *own* machine.
