        Nope.  No sign in /var/log/.  This was the first thing to do.
That was the one thing that made my think more about this.  It was an
error which said something about the kernel but it wasn't in the logs.  In
that period of time all that was shown in the /var/log/messages was just
the reports about pppd and dial.
