Okay. The config file confirms what I suspected -- kde is simply timing out
pppd if pppd can't negotiate a connection within 30 seconds, as instructed
by this parameter from the file:
>pppdTimeout=30
The first thing to try is making that paramater larger, say 60 or 90, to
give pppd more time to complete handshaking.
Second thing is to run pppd in debug mode -- this will cause a lot more
information to be written to your log file (probably /var/log/messages, if
your system is reasonably standard). I don't know how to do this through
KDE; in a simpler connection, you'd just add "debug" to pppd's command-line
switches or to /etc/ppp/options . In your case, you might try changing the line
pppdArguments=
to
pppdArguments=debug
If you do this and it generates the debug output, you might send that along
-- *just* the pppd messages from one unsuccessful connection ( = one process
number in the logfile).
Oh, as to your PS, I don't know what you mean by "stall", but I can think of
only three possible interactions:
1. Your mouse and modem share an IRQ, causing conflicts when you use the
mouse (this is pretty implausable - under normal circumstances, this would
make one of the two devices completely unusable, not produce intermittant
problems).
2. You are running so tight on memory that moving the mouse causes swap
space to be used, slowing the system down (what does "free" report when you
have KDE and pppd running?).
3. You are somehow changing focus by moving the mouse.
