In skimming through the X output, I note that you are trying and failing to
install the SVGA server. The reason *seems* to be that it can't find a legal
mode to run in, which *usually* means a problem with the specification of
monitor vertical sync, monitor horizontal sync, or video memory (or it may
mean a video card that isn't compatible with the SVGA server, but let's
begin by hoping for the best).
SO, here is what you need to try:
1. See if the VGA16 server will work. Even if it does, you won't find it
satisfactory, but this is a test.
2. Use SuperProbe to check your video card's RAM. It isn't really 64K, as
SVGA thinks it is, so you need to provide a better value.
3. You don't say what utility you are using to setup X. I suggest you use
xf86config, which is a bit clunky but very reliable ... and it asks you for
all the needed info, so you will know (a) what you told it and (b) what you
aren't sure of.
4. Check what version of XFree86 you are using. I noticed a message in the
output about the SiS chipset, and if memory serves, only the newest X11
(3.3.3.1, January 1999) supports the newer SiS cards (this memory is vague,
though, so don't count on it - check at URL http://www.xfree86.org/ (not
http://www.xfre86.org/ , as another message said) for the details.)
