Also make sure you have a color terminal type defined...
Here is the contents of my .vimrc file:
============================================================================
:if &term == "xterm"
: set term=xterm-color
:endif
:set background="light"
:syntax on
============================================================================
( This colons are in the file - they're not just indenting )
So if it finds the terminal type is "xterm" (which does not support
color) it changes it to xterm-color. I don't know what would happen if
I really DID connect in with a monochrome xterm, but I never do... :-)
