        Also make sure you have a color terminal type defined...

        Here is the contents of my .vimrc file:

============================================================================
:if &term == "xterm"
:       set term=xterm-color
:endif

:set background="light"
:syntax on
============================================================================

        ( This colons are in the file - they're not just indenting )

        So if it finds the terminal type is "xterm" (which does not support
color) it changes it to xterm-color.  I don't know what would happen if
I really DID connect in with a monochrome xterm, but I never do...  :-)
