Micah,
Where are you typing wmaker? When an X app starts, it looks at the
DISPLAY environment variable and uses whaat it finds to connect to the
X server (which it exects to be running already). X apps normally get
started from a startx sort of thing, or by another X app, so DISPLAY
sould be taken care of. I set DISPLAY=:0.0 and export it in
/etc/profile so I can start X apps from a text console if the spirit
moves me, but I don't usually use _any_ window manager. Perhaps you
missed something in setting up wmaker, but it might be worth a try to
say (if you use bash):
DISPLAY=:0.0 wmaker
