You are right when you say printf is a C function. But it's a
command as well. Try man 1 printf to learn more about the command and man
3 printf to find out more about the C function.
It seems that fist thing to try (it's faster) is ^L. This should
clear the screen. If the problem doesn't disapear I knew about 'echo -e
\\033c' which does the same after all.
For more tricks like that I'd say get Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO
which has a lot of similar solutions.
