Shutdown Comp ..

i have linux and windoze 95 on my ibm thinkpad ... anyways , when i do a
shutdown on win95 , it'll see the screen shutting down , but it doesn't
show the it is now safe to shutdown  ... instead it really shut down's
my computer , as if it had pressed the power off button on my computer
..  i wonder if linux can do that .. if yes , how ?
( i'm too lazy to wait for the your system is halted text msg before
manually pressing the power off button )
