You shot yourself in the foot, but you should still be able to limp.
I can't promise anything, and if you can smell the drive electronics
burning, it's dead.  But bad blocks and interrupted fsck's should not be
able to make the drive electronics fail.  My hd is about the same size
(1.2gb), so it's probably as old.  From time to it utterly fails to
boot.  I unplug the ribbon cable at each end, unplug the power cable
from the disk, plug everything back in, and try again.  Sometimes I have
to do it several times, once I had to find another ribbon cable to try,
but so far I have always managed to get it going again, and all will be
well for months after.  You have probably damaged the data on the thing
enough so it will be easier to  format it, fdisk it, make new
filesystems on it, and reinstall linux, (maybe fsck can recover it, but
I wouldn't count on it), but I hope you will have something to install
linux on. :-)
