There's a reason for most of the idiosyncracies. Back when RH started
out, there wasn't an "official" way of doing things, so they did what
they thought at the time was most sensible. Most distributions have
minor annoyances like this.
.profile was renamed .bash_profile to make it distinct from other
bourne derived shells, which also expect a .profile file.
